Published 28 Aug 19 by Caroline

Chingfest returns to Ridgeway Park on this Saturday 31 August from 1-9pm, and it’s bound to be one to remember!

For the final build up, we're exploring the artists on the Main Stage. Scroll to discover!

Born Neo Jessica Joshua, as a child Nao moved with her family from Nottingham to East London London and Essex. Living on the cusp of the capital meant she had all the possibilities of it at her reach.

When she wasn’t mining London’s groundbreaking underground music scene, she’d often stay up listening to the music her brothers played — pio-neering garage-grime groups like Pay As U Go and Heartless Crew. Every Thursday, the young teen would venture to a singing class in Walthamstow called Estate of the Arts. Her first live performances were at an open mic night at the legendary grime venue Palace Pavilion in Clapton.
Learning piano as a youngster gave Nao a head-start. Ditching legal studies, she enrolled at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, a prestige college known for harnessing the talents of young musical prodigies (some of Guildhall’s alumni include The Beatles’ producer George Martin and Bafta winner Mica Levi). Nao supported her time at Guildhall as a backing singer for the likes of Kwabs and Jarvis Cocker, and was part of an experimental acapella group called The Boxettes.

Nao has now released three EPs and two albums. Her debut album For All We Know was released in July 2016 leading to a Brit Nomination for Best British Female Solo Artist. Her most recent album, Saturn, was released in November 2018, and has been nominated for the Mercury Prize. Check out her website here

The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last four decades. Look at the recent history of soulful UK artists and you will find any number of short-lived acts that have achieved pop success. Narrow it down to those that have created a uniquely British sound and have endured as a global phenomenon on their own terms, and the list becomes short. Dues, then, to Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and Incognito, formed in 1979 and celebrating almost 40 years of positive vibes and undiluted Jazz-Funk.

The self-titled debut was a landmark for UK Jazz-Funk, featuring the extended, high-energy club hits as well as a young Sade pictured on the cover.

Now almost 40 years on and more than 17 albums later, the Bluey and Incognito story remains a uniquely Great British adventure. From Top 10 hits to producing and collaborating with legendary artists — from R&B icons and powerhouse vocalists to contemporary jazz musicians to international multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, including George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Philip Bailey, Jocelyn Brown, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Paul Weller, Maxi Priest, Mario Biondi — Bluey Maunick can take his place among the greats of global soul. Check out Incognito's YouTube channel for a taste of what's come on Saturday!

DJ Luck and MC Neat
DJ Luck & MC Neat are a British musical duo, comprising of Joel Samuels (aka DJ Luck) and Michael Rose (aka MC Neat), mainly performing a combination of House Music, UK Garage & DnB. They have had three consecutive UK Top 10 hits and are primarily known for, 'A Little Bit Of Luck', which started as a promotional dubplate, released at the price of £50! The track peaked at #9 in the UK charts. After the initial three chart hits they enjoyed, the majority of their work, along with their debut album, was produced along with, or by, the underground musician Shy Cookie, who was responsible for the shift in their music from sample based to programmed (original) and live instruments, helping them to maintain underground credibility that in turn helped fuel their mainstream success.
